Volunteer of the Year
Harrison's Hope recognized Anna Blevins as our volunteer of the year for 2009. Anna has been an example of compassionate companionship at the end of life, providing care to several of our patients. Thank you Anna for donating your time to our agency and patients.
Become a Volunteer
Volunteers are the heroes of hospice. Individuals who have time to share are invited to attend a Harrison's Hope Volunteer Training and learn the hospice story. No experience is required, just an interest in helping others. There is no commitment to become a hospice volunteer by attending the training. When Volunteer Training is completed we will meet individually to learn volunteer's areas of interest and expertise. In addition to working with patients and families, Harrison's Hope volunteers also provide support in the office and at community events.
What Volunteers can do:
- Sit with the dying
- Comfort the grieving
- Share talents
- Write letters and stories
- Household chores and errands
- Assist in the office
- Educate the community
How much time is required to be a hospice volunteer?
You may devote as much time as you choose. There is no minimum requirement. Each person has a different schedule and different time availability. Our Coordinator of Volunteer Services works with each volunteer to ensure an optimal volunteer schedule.
How to become a Hospice Volunteer
Hospice Volunteers complete a 16-hour orientation and training course. Trainings are offered throughout the year. Volunteer training covers many topics including the hospice philosophy of care, communicating with the dying, volunteer self-care, and grief support for patients and families.
